LIMBO
Triggered by an unknown event, a group of Specters suddenly awoke in Limbo with the realization that they were dead. Instinctively seeking each other out, the group found themselves able to proceed through an entrance that seemed to lead to the underground of Limbo and ended up in the Limbo Underside. They came very close to being attacked by a rampaging Revenant but were saved at the last minute by Rei, a young girl who appeared to have the powers necessary to fight such monsters. Once the group was safe in Limbo, Rei explained the situation to the best of her ability – that the world they now occupied was Purgatory and all those here were the souls of the dead. Under normal circumstances, the Specters of Purgatory would descend through its seven layers and make their way to the Cogs of Renewal which would allow them to reincarnate to their next lives. But something has gone wrong in Purgatory and the Cogs are stalled – which means everyone in Purgatory is trapped and will eventually stagnate and become Revenants. To Rei's surprise, the newly awakened group immediately offer to join her as Executors and solve the issues plaguing Purgatory. While hesitant, she eventually forms a contract with them all, allowing them to become Executors and fight alongside her. The group spends a month or so training and bonding and then descends through the Limbo Underside to the next layer.
INVIDIA
Upon arriving in the Envy Layer of Purgatory, the Executors spent some time reeling from the new memories they were beginning to gain as they moved through Purgatory. They also found that there was no way to descend any further and that the entrance to the Invidia Underside had been closed off. After some investigating, they were able to meet with Esme, a famous idol beloved by everyone in the city. At a meet and greet, Esme was able to identify the group as Executors and made an ominous remark about a "little birdie" who had warned her about the group. After some initial tension, Esme agreed to discuss things with the group – but double crossed them and attempted to poison them all, succeeding in making several of the Executors dangerously ill. Rei was able to identify Esme as an Authority, a powerful soul acting as the ruler of Invidia and with her in place, they would not be able to proceed. The Executors made a two pronged plan of attack to steal Esme's power from her – through destroying her image and by setting up a rival group to defeat her. Through investigation, the Executors managed to discover that Esme had risen to her position of power through a contest that was once held in Invidia. She was so determined to win that she betrayed the two girls competing alongside her and poisoned her rival, Kotori which resulted in her dying a messy, sudden death. With no one to stand in her way, Esme rose to fame and used her power to crush anyone who tried to rise against her. The Executors were also able to find Alice, the third contestant who had managed to avoid being targeted by Esme. While her memories of the incident were muddy, with the help of the Executors and her one remaining fan, she managed to regain them and planned to help the Executors overthrow Esme. The group then put their plan into action, forming an idol group, Idol-ON, with the younger girls to serve as rivals and smearing Esme's image in a whisper campaign in the meantime. Esme eventually challenged them directly, but with everyone's efforts combined (and a little bit of cheating) Idol-ON took the victory and with it, Esme's Authority. With her power stolen, Esme retreated to the Invidia Underside where she confronted the Executors who came to pass through. She became the Aberrant Beelzebub of Envy and put up a good fight but the Executors managed to best her once more and proceeded to the next layer.
AVARITIA
The Executors were put on the back foot immediately upon their arrival in Avaritia, the Greed Layer of Purgatory. As a testament to greed gone out of control, the Layer was a wild sensory overload of lights, sound and activity which severely hampered the ability of several Executors to navigate the place, let alone investigate. Thankfully, with Esme's defeat, the Executors had claimed her former residence as her own and were able to use it as a base away from the chaos of Avaritia to plan their next move. Through spending time in Avaritia, the Executors were able to identify several candidates for the Layer's Authority and one particular curiosity that seemed out of place – a masked phantom haunting the local theater and demanding repayment for her debts. After investigating the incident, the Executors were able to identify her as the former Authority of Avaritia, Lady Luck, whose powers had been stolen when she was defeated in a high-stakes bet by the current Authority, Greta. Realizing that Greta's power drew from the massive amount of money she possessed, the Executors planned a heist to steal both Greta's money and her power. The team split into three, infiltrating the physical Vault #0 where her money was believed to be kept, breaking into the bank systems to transfer her money and keeping Greta distracted with a high-stakes poker game. The plan ran into a few snags, but eventually the Authority was successfully transferred, robbing Greta of her power. Like Esme before her, Greta became an Aberrant – Mammon of Greed – before being defeated by the Executors who successfully moved on to the next Layer.
