Powers, Abilities & Power Requests

EXECUTOR ABILITIES

Upon becoming an Executor, characters will discover that they have access to a number of new powers and abilities that will aid them on their journey into Purgatory. To start with, all Executors will have the following base powers:

⚝ Weapon Summon: Executors can manifest one unique weapon of their own out of thin air. This will be their ‘signature’ weapon so it should represent your character in some way! Note that ‘weapon’ here is being used loosely and that you’re also free to have characters summon tools or toys or things that you wouldn’t usually consider to be a weapon. For example – in Crystar canon, Rei uses a sword as her weapon, but her teammate Kokoro fights with her fists and so her weapon forms around her hands. A character’s signature weapon can also change in appearance depending on both power and character development, but this is largely an aesthetic change only (unless you specifically have a power that will alter your weapon).
⚝ Enhanced Strength and Durability: When in their Executor form, characters will find they hit harder and are able to withstand stronger blows from their enemies. This aspect of their powerset is largely a meta conceit to put all characters on the same level, but it can be played with as you like. An Executor's strength should be capped at what would be reasonable for an unaugmented human being to pull off (i.e, they could be as strong as a bodybuilder but not a robot).
⚝ Enhanced Movement Capabilities: In order to help them get around Purgatory, Executors will find they have become overall more agile. They can run much faster and have much greater stamina to do so and perhaps most excitingly, they can now bunnyhop around like a demented platformer mascot. They can't quite fly with this ability, but they could probably jump up to a second floor window without any problems.
⚝ Empathy Sense: A new ability that unlocked as the Executors proceeded into Purgatory. As the ones responsible for keeping order in Purgatory, this ability allows them to get a better sense of the feelings and memories of Specters and sometimes Authorities in distress. Certain strong feelings can trigger it automatically, but Executors may also consciously invoke this ability during threads with Specters and certain Authorities to better understand their circumstances.

Additionally, each Executor will have a Sin that will define them that was assigned to your character upon acceptance of your application. Sins will have an effect on how well they can combat different types of Revenants and Aberrants.

On top of that, all Executors will be able to gain a number of unique powers as the game progresses. These powers can be literally anything, with a few exceptions – the following types of powers are blanket restricted, just for playability purposes:

      ⚝ Time travel
      ⚝ Long-range teleportation (short-range blinking/flash stepping is fine)
      ⚝ Mind control/mind reading
⚝ Powers relating to control over life and death (BECAUSE.... YOU KNOW.)

Aside from that, you're free to go wild! You're encouraged to make your powers somewhat thematic to your character, just for the #aesthetic but if you want to go apeshit and just hit random on the superpower wiki? I'm here for you babe.

When starting out, unique powers should be at a basic, beginner level of power – think of them as a first-tier attack rather than something like a unique finisher. Not to fear, though! As well as adding new powers to your skillset, you can also choose to upgrade your existing powers using Alcea. This will bump them up a tier of power and make them more effective or expand their existing utility.

Buying a new unique power or upgrading an existing power will cost one Idea, which can be gained by, among other things, clearing dungeons. For more information on Idea, see the Memoria page. You may also substitute three Alcea when buying a power upgrade. Alcea are distributed as rewards for high levels of activity in the game. If you have a thread of at least twenty comments (so, ten from you, ten from your thread parter) you may submit it below and receive an Alcea in return. Six Alcea make up one Idea, which you can then exchange for new powers or other regains.

Please note that as participation in Underside logs grants one Idea by default, Underside logs are not eligible for Alcea submission.

To see more about Idea and other regains, see the Memoria FAQ.

SINS

All souls who travel through Purgatory are burdened by Sin, representing the flaws and mistakes they made during their lives. This includes the Executors – when you app, you will be asked to list three of the seven sins that you feel apply to your character and to briefly outline why you think they’re well suited and one will be selected for you when your application is processed. The Sins are, in Can Cry at least, as follows:

Envy: Envy is defined by anger, discontent and covetous desire directed towards the happiness, successes or belongings of others. Envy isn’t just simple FOMO, it’s the desire to hurt and destroy and take the things you want, because someone else got to them first. Jealous characters are good candidates for this sin, though Envy is usually defined as the furious desire for something that was never yours to begin with.
Examples: Vegeta (Dragonball Z), Syndrome (The Incredibles), Hades (Disney Hercules)

Gluttony: Gluttony is commonly portrayed as overconsumption of food, but it refers to overconsumption in general -- overconsumption, overindulging to the point of waste and excess. Characters who overindulge in anything to the point of harm to themselves and those around them are perfect candidates for gluttony.
Examples: Jabba the Hutt (Star Wars), Polpo (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), King Dedede (Kirby)

Greed: Greed is the desire for excess - it has some overlap with Gluttony, but while sinners of Gluttony want to consume, sinners of Greed just want to have it. If there’s something they don’t have, they want to get it, just for the sake of owning it. While this mostly applies to material goods and wealth, any characters who are driven by needing to take, take, take while never being satisfied are great Greed candidates.
Examples: Tamatoa (Moana), Scrooge McDuck (Duck Tales), Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood)

Lust: Alright kids, it’s time for the Big Horny. NO WAIT COME BACK I’M KIDDING. While usually portrayed as sexual desire, Lust is more akin to obsessive, potentially self-destructive desire for any abstract thing. This thing can be power, money, respect -- as long as you long for it hard enough, that’s Lust, babey. Lust is all-consuming to the point of eclipsing everything else and like Greed, is rarely satisfied.
Examples: Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Erik (The Phantom of the Opera), Flonne (Disgaea)

Pride: Pride is probably the easiest Sin to understand - the desire for attention and to have yourself elevated above all others. Pride can be as simple as excessive love for one’s self, but it can also come through in characters who are loners and push others away - that is to say their pride won’t allow them to accept help from others. As such, confident types, as well as lone wolf types, can both easily fall under the Pride banner.
Examples: Gaston (The Beauty and the Beast), Light Yagami (Death Note), Lucifer (Paradise Lost)

Wrath: Actually, I lied. Wrath is probably the easiest Sin to get your head around. Wrath is not just excessive anger, but the desire to see harm (physical or otherwise) on people as a result of said Wrath. This Wrath doesn’t have to be projected outwards, though - characters who desire harm on themselves, out of self-hated or other reasons, can also potentially be pegged as Wrath sinners.
Examples: Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty), J Jonah Jameson (Spiderman), Asuka Langely Sohryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Sloth: The Big Sleepy. While it’s easy to dismiss Sloth as laziness, it actually more broadly covers the concept of apathy and an unwillingness to challenge unjust situations because keeping the status quo is easier. Characters who shrug off or reject responsibility or expectations put on them are also good potential Sloth sinners.
Examples: Simba (The Lion King), Garfield (yeah THAT garfield), Lister (Red Dwarf)

The above list is more or less a guideline to point you in the right direction, but feel free to really put your own spin on what each Sin means to your character! The game is intended to have a roughly even spread of each Sin (that's why the character cap is wonky and NOT just because i'm not a maths gay) so please be aware that your first choice for your character's Sin might not be the one they are assigned.

Sins exist to give players potential trajectories for character arcs as they go through the game. You don't have to stick like glue to the exact beats of a Sin-based character arc, but it's something worth pursuing if it interests you!

pioailurophobia: (Just Like Father)

[personal profile] pioailurophobia 2020-08-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Kingslayer (Mordred)
Thread: kingslayer takes the L
Explaination: Kingslayer's Sin is Lust, and more specifically, the desire to prove themself to everyone (and, in life, their father) that they are worthwhile, and if that fails that they are dangerous enough that they need to be paid attention to. This manifests in self-destructive and reckless behavior, such as continually seeking out battles to earn approval and refusing to back down to prove their worthiness and valor. By willingly retreating from the fight with the monster rather than continuing to trade blows with it to get the glory, and because their retreat was motivated the desire to protect rather than last-resort survival, this became Kingslayer's first step to getting over their Sin.
mementomoritz: MERCY YES (Default)

[personal profile] mementomoritz 2020-08-05 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Medic (Mercy)
New Power Request: I'm requesting her starter power. Unsurprisingly, it's healing abilities. For now it only works on others, and only as long as she's physically touching them. It doesn't have to be direct skin to skin contact, but they do have to be close. So for example, wearing gloves wouldn't prevent her from healing them, but she couldn't heal someone on the other side of a closed door.
Idea Payment: Starting strong.

[personal profile] iserveeverybody 2020-08-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Relic (Alice)
New Power Request: Living weapon. While transformed, Alice's hands and feet can strike with enough power to be formidable weapons in their own right. It's not actually an increase in physical strength or durability (that will come later), just that when she is specifically striking someone without a weapon, a sort of energy field forms for a moment around her fist (or foot or forehead or whatever), granting it the hardness of a proper weapon. Her ACTUAL executor weapon is not effected by this power, and is just A Weapon.
Idea Payment: I did the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM for this but will do better in the future.
pride_of_amarcia: (Caution)

[personal profile] pride_of_amarcia 2020-08-05 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Brainiac (Pascal)
New Power Request: The ability to fire basic blasts of energy from her Executor Weapon.
Idea Payment: The contract is signed!
pioailurophobia: (Default)

[personal profile] pioailurophobia 2020-08-05 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Kingslayer (Mordred)
New Power Request: Mana Burst - By overloading their "body" with magical energy and using their mana in a manner similar to jet propulsion, Kingslayer temporarily becomes much stronger and faster than any normal human could ever aspire to be. However, this transformation is temporary, and when it ends Kingslayer is and disabled for a few moments before they can rejoin the battle.
Idea Payment: Using the Starter Power from this thread.

beknights: deep inside (laden with monstrous souls)

[personal profile] beknights 2020-08-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Character: Seal (The Hollow Knight)
New Power Request: Blink - Seal is able to teleport short distances within line of sight near-instantly, dissolving momentarily into a shadowy silhouette that any attacks pass through before reforming at their chosen spot. It takes at least a minute to recharge once used, preventing them from chaining it together.
Idea Payment: Using the power freebie from this thread!

crosscutting: (pare)

[personal profile] crosscutting 2020-08-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Pariah (Cassidy)
New Power Request: Split - Pariah uses her weapon to split herself in two. Each copy is allotted one Durability from Pariah's pool--if she voluntarily ends the power, she regains both, and if one is destroyed she only regains one. Once a copy has been destroyed in a combat, she can't use Split again for the duration on that combat. (I figure more uses after destruction can come with power ups, as well as maybe granting an extra action per turn? Not sure how unbalanced that would be.)
Idea Payment: fart noise
crypddyd: (Default)

[personal profile] crypddyd 2020-08-06 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Dimitri
New Power Request: Crest of Blaiddyd [Superstrength]: Dimitri has inhuman physical strength beyond that of even the average Executor. He can snap thin steel or necks with ease, and lift multiple people without issue. This ability applies to any action where pure physical power can give an advantage, such as jumping or throwing. But his stamina is still at normal Executor level so he can overwork himself if he doesn't take rests. This does not add to his speed and in fact makes him clumsy in many ways. He can be prone to breaking things if not careful- including his own body.
Idea Payment: Starter Power
seasharp: (the thunderer)

[personal profile] seasharp 2020-08-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Ariel (Sayaka Miki)
New Power Request: I GET KNOCKED DOWN, BUT I GET UP AGAIN-- That is to say, Regeneration. Ariel is able to heal herself, so even if wounded, she can keep going. She cannot heal others with this, it's limited fully to herself. Basically lol imagine getting knocked out??? I'm not entirely sure how to balance the base power with the current battle system, but I'm very here for it coming at a price.
Idea Payment: boop
schardynfreude: (Default)

[personal profile] schardynfreude 2020-08-06 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Your Majesty (Ardyn)
New Power Request: Starting power! Not to big steal from mercy BUT healing touch also. Same limitations--touch in general, other people but not himself (so I guess the healers will have to heal each other for now), the same minor healing abilities I imagine. hey at least this time isn't for Just Starscourge
Idea Payment: contractual obligation
schardynfreude: (Default)

[personal profile] schardynfreude 2020-08-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Your Majesty (Ardyn)
New Power Request: Gonna have to go with warping my dudes. Call it a short-range blink or flashstep, because fuck you noctis ardyn doesn't have to chuck his weapon to do it that's canon. He'll leave behind a nice pink-red afterimage but the actual movement is nigh-instantaneous. There one second, nyoomed the next! He can't take anyone with him, just his own self. I imagine that for a base level, he can't just do it willy nilly all the time but has to have a cooldown of some sort between uses. I'm willing to take whatever limitations you might want to impose on him for this whether it be [x] uses or a hit to Movement or distance or something.
Idea Payment: cashing in that free idea while I'm at it baybee
alcahest: (Default)

[personal profile] alcahest 2020-08-06 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Character: magnum opus (cardia)
New Power Request: Chronolock — The ability to put a target in temporary stasis. Currently, this only works on a small area; she can't stop an entire person, but she could lock a gun to prevent it from firing, or target someone's leg to stop them from being able to walk. The stasis lasts for 5 seconds, and has a 5 minute cooldown before use.
Idea Payment: thanks for the free gift rei
daughterofthemark: (05F. The king's roar sounds)

[personal profile] daughterofthemark 2020-08-06 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Royal Veil (Arianna)
New Power Request: Attack Order - By shouting words of encouragement, Royal Veil is able to temporarily increase the attack power of an ally. This is purely a "damage boost" and does not actually increase the ally's strength or whatever other trait would logically be required to achieve the same effect normally. This only works if the target can hear her, even if it's herself.
Idea Payment: that's great, it starters with a cute rei
guffawsungraciously: you know, casting sick shadow magics (more darkness than a kh cutscene)

[personal profile] guffawsungraciously 2020-08-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Character: White Eagle (Jasper)
New Power Request: Zam - Your standard starter dark magic spell, where you fire off a bolt of stygian lightning to attack someone or something. It's basically the equivalent of fireball or what have you. It's not super powerful, but it's not super taxing, either.
Idea Payment: Here!
emberserker: Peaceful smile. (when has this ever happened)

[personal profile] emberserker 2020-08-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Wolfsbane (Anna Fugo)
New Power Request: Given the fire-and-ice theme she's got, let's start with basic fireballs. One small fireball at a time for now, and she can fire them from a magic circle that appears behind her and disappears as soon as it's cast. No setting them up elsewhere yet, sorry, Anna.
Idea Payment: starter power
emberserker: Pleading her abilities. (trust me it's fine)

[personal profile] emberserker 2020-08-06 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Character: Wolfsbane (Anna Fugo)
New Power Request: Basic ice shards that work the exact same as the fireballs: small projectiles, one at a time, can currently only be fired from her and not set up elsewhere yet.
Idea Payment: free idea
alcahest: ('cause i'm half-sick of shadows,)

[personal profile] alcahest 2020-08-06 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Character: magnum opus (cardia)
New Power Request: Form Change — A weapon alteration power. Currently, it will allow her weapon to switch between two forms: Hour Forme, a short spear suitable for close combat, and Minute Forme, a longer ranseur-like polearm to be used at a distance.
Idea Payment: that bonus idea from the newbie executor starter pack
